The cemetery of Les Valls de Mataró inaugurates the first cremation ovens in the Maresme region

Mataró, January 30, 2009

Today, Mayor Joan Antoni Baron presided over the official visit to the new administrative and service building that houses the cremation ovens of the Les Valls municipal cemetery. This will be the first crematorium in the region, and with its expected operation starting in February, citizens of the Maresme region will no longer need to travel to Barcelona or other areas to cremate their deceased. The new service will be managed by the concessionaire of Mataró's two municipal cemeteries, Cementiris Metropolitans CGC SL, a company formed by the partners Cabré Junqueras SA and Serveis Funeraris Integrals. In addition to the mayor, today’s visit was attended by several notable individuals, including the Councilor for Public Works, Francesc Melero; the manager of Cementiris Metropolitans CGC SL, Joan Hans; and the administrators of the concessionary company, Josep Maria Cabré and Joan Ventura. The works, with a budget of 2,032,952 euros, have been covered by the concessionaire. The entrance to the new building is accessed from the new entrance to the cemetery located on the Cirera road. A public parking lot with capacity for around 100 vehicles has been provided at the access esplanade.

Building Characteristics

The building has a single floor to integrate it into the landscape and the overall design of the Les Valls cemetery, which has eleven rows of niches and is the most modern of Mataró's two cemeteries. The total constructed area is 483.24 square meters and includes: a porch, lobby, accessible facilities, waiting room, marble display area, florist, administration office, storage, customer service offices, management office, wake room, transfer room, preparation room, and two cremation ovens. The internal layout of the building allows for a separate flow of visitors, so that those attending a farewell ceremony do not coincide with users of the office area. Externally, the building features an exterior wall of perforated brick with a slate stone finish, alternating three sizes and colors. The exterior carpentry is anodized aluminum with glass. The main entrance door is a sliding gate made of corten steel, mimicking the geometry of the façade’s finish with empty and filled spaces. Lastly, the roof is flat and inverted with a gravel finish.

The family business continued through his son-in-law, Josep Maria Cabré i Freixas, and later by his grandsons Carles and Miquel Cabré Junqueras. In 1970, the business was incorporated as Cabré Junqueras SA, with its headquarters in Mataró, and in 1980, it also took over Funerària Encarnat de Granollers. Today, the company is led by Josep Maria Cabré i Masjuan and Josep Maria Mons i Gallifa, members of the family’s fourth generation, who continue the work of their predecessors by offering the highest professionalism and quality of service.

Serveis Funeraris Integrals is the leading group in the management of funeral services, funeral homes, and cemeteries in the province of Barcelona, currently covering 56 towns in Catalonia. SFI was born from the merger of three family businesses—Ventura, Fenés, and Viñas—with over 300 years of experience in the funeral sector and a team of 200 professionals. Among the group’s funeral homes, notable ones include Tanatori Ronda de Dalt in Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Boi, Vilafranca del Penedès, and Vilanova i la Geltrú, as well as the management of Mataró's two municipal cemeteries (under a shared administrative concession with Cabré Junqueras) and the Parc de Roques Blanques regional cemetery in El Papiol.
