October 26, 2016 - Àltima, a catalan company specializing in the management of funeral services, crematories, and cemeteries, plans to build two new funeral facilities in Terrassa (Vallès Occidental) and Cervelló (Baix Llobregat). The company has already defined the architectural projects for both future centers and expects to start construction next year. Àltima will invest over 2.5 million euros in these developments.

The new funeral homes in Terrassa and Cervelló will join the 29 facilities currently managed by Àltima across Catalonia, mainly in the Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Garraf, Penedès, Bages, Ripollès, and Alt Empordà regions. According to Josep Ventura, General Director of Àltima Funeral Services, “with these new projects, we are expanding and reinforcing our presence in Catalonia with the aim of providing high-quality local service to families undergoing the process of bereavement.”

Terrassa: Àltima’s First Facility in the Vallès

The project in Terrassa, designed by the architectural firm Batlle&Roig Arquitectes, will be the company’s first facility in Vallès Occidental, where it already manages the cemeteries of Sant Cugat del Vallès and Castellar del Vallès. The new facility will be built on a plot of over 5,000 square meters in the Can Petit area (Avinguda del Vallès, 742) and will feature 1,380 square meters of built space, all on the ground floor. The funeral home will include three viewing rooms, each with access to a private garden, and a multi-confessional chapel with seating for 140 people. Additionally, the center will have an access porch, a large entrance hall, waiting rooms, two administrative offices, and a room for personalized family service. There will also be a vending area and a landscaped external parking lot with 81 parking spaces.

Notable features of the project, besides its modern and functional design, include environmental criteria considered by Batlle&Roig Arquitectes. Constructive solutions were chosen for their proximity in terms of production, aiming to minimize the carbon footprint. Recycled or certified materials have been used, as well as prefabricated structural and finishing elements to reduce energy use in manufacturing and construction waste. Furthermore, the project ensures maximum energy efficiency with heat recovery climate systems and low-consumption LED lighting in all rooms, prioritizing natural light usage. Green areas will be landscaped with native, low-water plants.

The investment for the new Terrassa funeral home is 2.3 million euros, with a projected construction timeline of 12 months.

Cervelló: Increased Presence in Baix Llobregat

In the Baix Llobregat region, Àltima has a strong presence with 10 funeral homes and the comprehensive management of 6 public cemeteries. In Cervelló, the company manages the municipal cemetery adjacent to which a new funeral home is planned. Designed by architect Xavier Alba (a + b, architects), the facility will be built on a 550-square-meter plot (Carrer Joan Turruella i Urpina) and will have 144 square meters of built space. It will include a viewing room and a multi-confessional chapel, as well as a vestibule, a family service room, direct access to the cemetery, and a perimeter garden for exclusive use by users. Environmental and energy efficiency criteria will also be considered in its construction, including the use of locally manufactured materials (to reduce carbon footprint), recycled or certified materials, and other insulation, climate control, and lighting aspects to ensure maximum savings.

Construction of the future Cervelló funeral home is expected to start in the first half of 2017, with a six-month execution period and an investment of 285,000 euros.

Other Projects in Girona and Gavà

Additionally, Àltima plans to begin operations in Girona city soon, with a funeral home in the Mas Xirgu industrial area. In this province, the company already has centers in Ripoll and Figueres. Planned improvements include the renovation of the Gavà funeral home, which has been operational since 2000, scheduled for the first half of next year.
